What are card protectors?
A card protector is an item placed on top of player’s cards, protecting them
from being accidentally "mucked". Mucked cards are those folded and thrown
back to the dealer or into a pile of cards that have been folded by other
players.
Why should I use a card protector?
The main reason to use a card protector is to prevent your cards from being
accidentally mucked by another player or the dealer. If your hand is mucked,
your hand is dead and you can't retrieve it from the pile of mucked cards.
Suppose you are sitting directly to the right or left of the dealer. The
dealer will commonly place all the mucked cards to one side or the other,
usually near your cards. If there isn’t anything on your cards to protect
them, the dealer may accidentally place the mucked pile with your cards.
World Series of Poker Rule 73 states: “If a dealer kills an unprotected
hand, the player will have no redress and will not be entitled to his or her
money back...” Other rules state that if another player mucks his or her
cards and they land on your unprotected cards, your cards will be considered
dead also.
